وكان بوتين ضابطا برتبة لفتنانت كولونيل في المخابرات السوفيتية (كيه.جي.بي)، وتسلم الرئاسة من بوريس يلتسن في آخر يوم له في المنصب في 1999.
وعندما سئل عما إذا كان يفكر في مسألة خلافته، خلال فيلم أعده التلفزيون الروسي بمناسبة مرور ربع قرن على توليه السلطة، قال بوتين (72 عاما): “أفكر دوما في هذا الأمر”.
وأضاف: “في النهاية، الخيار سيكون للشعب، الشعب الروسي.. أعتقد أنه يجب أن يكون هناك شخص، أو بالأحرى عدة أشخاص، حتى يكون للشعب خيار”.
ولا يوجد خليفة واضح لبوتين لكن بموجب الدستور الروسي يتولى رئيس الوزراء السلطات الرئاسية إذا أصبح الرئيس غير قادر على أداء مهامه.
