وردا على سؤال خلال مقابلة مجلة تايم عما إذا كان السلام ممكنا في ظل وجود زيلينسكي كرئيس، أجاب ترامب: “أجل، أعتقد ذلك.. إنه الرئيس الآن، وأعتقد أننا سنعقد صفقة”.
وتقدم المقابلة، التي نُشرت، الجمعة، وأُجريت في 22 أبريل/نيسان، لمحة عن الـ100 يوم الأولى من رئاسة ترامب. وكرر فيها ترامب اعتقاده بأن أوكرانيا أشعلت الصراع مع روسيا برغبتها في الانضمام إلى حلف شمال الأطلسي (الناتو)- وهو أمر يعتقد أنه لن يحدث.
وأوضح ترامب: “لا أعتقد أنهم سيتمكنون أبدا من الانضمام إلى حلف الناتو.. أعتقد أن هذا كان منذ اليوم الأول، أعتقد أن هذا ما تسبب في اندلاع الحرب عندما بدأوا الحديث عن الانضمام إلى الناتو”.
وأضاف ترامب أنه يعتقد أن (الرئيس الروسي فلاديمير) بوتين يفضل “الذهاب والاستيلاء على كل شيء”، في إشارة إلى أوكرانيا، لكنه “الوحيد الذي يمكنه التفاوض بشأن هذا الأمر”.
وكان ترامب كرر خلال حملته الانتخابية أنه يستطيع حل الصراع خلال يوم واحد أو 24 ساعة. وقال لمجلة “تايم” إن هذا “كان على سبيل المزاح”.. وأضاف ترامب: “حسنا، قلت ذلك على سبيل المزاح، وقلته كمبالغة، لأني أردت توضيح وجهة نظري، والأمر يتم الترويج له بالطبع من خلال الأخبار الكاذبة”، وأضاف: “من الواضح أن الناس يعلمون أنني عندما قلتُ ذلك، كان مزاحا، ولكنني قلت أيضا إن الحرب ستنتهي”.
