ويمتدّ المتحف على مساحة تزيد على 35.000 متر مربع، وتمّ تصميمه ليحاكي التّكوينات الصخريّة الطبيعية، ما يعكس التزامه بتعزيز فهم العالم الطبيعي.
ومن خلال مقتنياته، يأخذ المتحف زوّاره في رحلةٍ عبر الزمن تمتدّ حتى 13.8 مليار سنة، مع ما يتضمنه من مجموعة المقتنيات من بينها هيكل التيرانوصور الشهير «ستان»، وهو هيكل عظمي متحجّر «تيرانوصور ريكس» يبلغ طوله 11.7 متر، ويعود تاريخه إلى 67 مليون سنة، وعيّنة من «نيزك مورتشيسون» الذي يبلغ عمره سبعة مليارات سنة، وتحتوي هذه العيّنة على مركّبات «غبار نجميّ» عضوي أقدم من نظامنا الشمسي، وقد قدّمت هذه العيّنة للعلماء رؤيةً حول التركيبة الأساسية للحياة. سيستمتع الزوار أيضاً بأعدادٍ كثيرة من الحفريات، بما فيها تلك التي تحمل أدلةً على وجود الفيل العربي ذي الأنياب الأربعة الذي يعود تاريخه إلى سبعة ملايين سنة، والذي جاب أبوظبي في وقتٍ كانت فيه معظم المنطقة عبارةً عن مشهدٍ طبيعيّ من الأنهار والمروج العشبية والغابات.
