قال الجمهوري كيفن مكارثي الذي فاز بمنصب رئيس مجلس النواب الأمريكي وخسره في تسعة أشهر مضطربة هذا العام في عمود بصحيفة وول ستريت جورنال اليوم الأربعاء إنه سيغادر الكونجرس، مما ينهي مسيرته في الكونجرس.
وكتب مكارثي (58 عاما) يقول “قررت مغادرة مجلس النواب في نهاية هذا العام لخدمة أمريكا عبر سبل جديدة”.
وقد يعصف رحيل مكارثي بآمال الحزب الجمهوري في الإحتفاظ بالأغلبية العام المقبل، والزعيم السابق للحزب والقوة الضاربة في جمع التبرعات للحملات الإنتخابية كان قد ساعد الجمهوريين في الهيمنة على مجلس النواب في 2022.
وجاءت خطوته بعد تأمل إستمر لأسابيع عكف خلالها مكارثي يفكر في تبعات القرار.
دخل مكارثي الكونجرس لأول مرة في 2007، وأخذ يرتقي في السنوات التالية في صفوف القيادة الحزبية في مجلس النواب قبل أن يبدأ فترة ولاية قصيرة لكن عاصفة في صدارة الجمهوريين بالكونجرس.
وإتسمت فترة ولايته رئيسا لمجلس النواب بعلاقات متوترة مع المتشددين الجمهوريين، والذين صوتوا لصالح خروجه في الثالث من أكتوبر تشرين الأول بعد أن أيد مشروع قانون للإنفاق مدعوم من الحزبين أدى إلى تجنب إغلاق الحكومة.
وحل محله مايك جونسون، الوافد الجديد نسبيا إلى القيادة، بعد أسابيع من نزاع جمهوري شديد ترشح أثناءها ثلاثة مخضرمين لم يكلل النجاح مسعاهم.
وقد إختلف مكارثي مع المتشددين حين جاهر بالقول إن الرئيس السابق دونالد ترامب يتحمل المسؤولية عن الهجوم على مقر الكونجرس في السادس من يناير كانون الثاني 2021 لكنه دأب لاحقا على التعبير عن ولائه للرئيس السابق.
كان مكارثي أول رئيس لمجلس النواب الأمريكي يطاح به من منصبه، لكنه سيصبح ثالث رئيس لمجلس النواب من الجمهوريين يرحل من الكونجرس، بعد جون بينر وبول راين، بعد سجال شديد مع اليمين الجمهوري المتشدد.
