ولد سمو الشيخ خالد بن محمد بن زايد آل نهيان 8 يناير/كانون الثاني 1982، وهو الإبن الأكبر للشيخ محمد بن زايد، ووالدته الشيخة سلامة بنت حمدان آل نهيان ، وتخرج من أكاديمية ساندهيرست العسكرية في المملكة المتحدة وخدم بجهاز أمن الدولة.
عُيّن رئيساً لجهاز أمن الدولة بدرجة وزير بموجب مرسوم إتحادي بتاريخ 15 فبراير/شباط 2016، وإستمر في منصبه حتى 17 يناير/ كانون الثاني 2017 عندما عُيّن نائباً لمستشار الأمن الوطني بدرجة وزير.
وأصبح الشيخ خالد بن محمد عضواً بالمجلس التنفيذي لإمارة أبوظبي بموجب مرسوم أميري صدر بتاريخ 21 يناير/كانون الثاني 2019.
وبعد نحو 9 أشهر، عيّن الشيخ خالد رئيساً لمكتب أبوظبي التنفيذي، وأصبح مسؤولاً عن كل ما يخص المجلس التنفيذي من موضوعات مرفوعة أو خطط أو طلبات أو تخطيط.. كما يشغل الشيخ خالد عضوية مجلس إدارة جهاز أبو ظبي للاستثمار وشركة بترول الإمارات (أدنوك).
وشارك الشيخ خالد في عدد من المناسبات المهمة، إذ ظهر مع رئيس الوزراء الياباني فوميو كيشيدا، يوم 26 سبتمبر/أيلول 2022، وهو يوقع معه إتفاقية الشراكة الإستراتيجية الشاملة بين البلدين، وذلك على هامش الزيارة التي أجراها لطوكيو.
كما ترأس وفد الإمارات المشارك في مراسم تشييع جنازة رئيس الوزراء الياباني السابق، شينزو آبي، في العاصمة طوكيو، بحضور عدد من قادة وزعماء دول العالم، وكان حضوره للجنازة لافتاً، خاصةً أن دول الخليج أرسلت زعماءها أو وزراء بارزين للمشاركة فيها.
وقد أشرف الشيخ خالد في فبراير/شباط 2023، على عملية “الفارس الشهم”، التي أطلقتها دولة الإمارات لإغاثة المتضررين من الزلزال الذي تعرضت له تركيا وسوريا، من خلال تسيير جسر جوي لنقل فرق البحث والإنقاذ والمعدات الطبية والمساعدات اللازمة.
كما يولي الشيخ خالد إهتماماً خاصاً بالشباب، وكذلك بالمجالات الاقتصادية.
