أنتخب وزير الصحة الاسكتلندي حمزة يوسف، الاثنين، رئيسا للحزب الوطني الاسكتلندي الحاكم، ليصبح الطريق أمامه ممهدا كي يكون أول رئيس مسلم لحكومة اسكتلندا، في تاريخها والمملكة المتحدة.
وبوصول يوسف (37 عاما) إلى منصب رئيس وزراء اسكتلندا، سيكون أيضا أول شخص من أقلية عرقية يتولى هذا المنصب في إحدى الحكومات المفوضة التابعة للمملكة المتحدة، وأول مسلم يقود أيضا حزبا كبيرا في البلاد.
ونافس على منصب زعيم الحزب الوطني الاسكتلندي بجانب يوسف، كل من وزيرة المالية كيت فوربس، ووزيرة سلامة المجتمع السابق آش ريغان.
وحصل يوسف في الجولة الأولى من التصويت على 48.2 بالمئة من الأصوات، تليه فوربس التي حصلت على 40.7 بالمئة، وآش ريغان بنحو 11.1 بالمئة ، بحسب الحزب الوطني الاسكتلندي.
وحسم يوسف الجولة الثانية بفوزه بنسبة 52.1 بالمئة، بينما حصلت فوربس على 47.9 بالمئة من الأصوات.
وعلق الحزب الوطني الاسكتلندي على النتيجة على تويتر قائلا: “تهانينا لإنتخاب حمزة يوسف زعيما جديدا للحزب الوطني الاسكتلندي ورئيسا للحكومة في اسكتلندا، دعونا نواصل معا بناء اسكتلندا أفضل”.
ومن المقرر أن يخلف يوسف، نيكولا ستارجون التي إستقالت في مارس/آذار الماضي من منصب رئيسة الوزراء وكذلك قيادة الحزب الوطني الاسكتلندي.
وقد إنضم يوسف إلى الحزب الوطني الاسكتلندي في عام 2005، و كان أيضا أول وزير من جنوب آسيا، وأول وزير مسلم في مجلس الوزراء يخدم في الحكومة الاسكتلندية.
وفي مايو/ آيار2011 ، تم إنتخاب يوسف لعضوية البرلمان الاسكتلندي كعضو إضافي لمنطقة غلاسكو عندما كان عمره 26 عاما، ليصبح آنذاك أصغر نائب ينتخب لعضوية البرلمان الاسكتلندي.
