في إنجاز طبي ملفت، أعلن جراحون في نيويورك عن نجاحهم في إجراء أول عملية زراعة عين كاملة لشخص، وذلك في رغم عدم إستعادة المريض بصره.. العملية التي تمت خلال الستة أشهر الماضية كانت جزءًا من عملية أوسع لزراعة وجه، حيث أظهرت العين المزروعة علامات إيجابية، مثل وجود أوعية دموية تعمل بشكل جيد وشبكية عين تبدو في حالة جيدة.
المريض، آرون جيمس، الذي كان قد تعرض لحادث شديد أدى إلى تلف جزء كبير من وجهه وفقدان البصر في عينه اليسرى، خضع لهذه العملية الفريدة التي إستمرت 21 ساعة.. ورغم أنه لم يعيد بصره بشكل كامل حتى الآن، يعد هذا الإنجاز خطوة هامة نحو تطوير تقنيات زراعة الأعضاء.
يشير الأطباء إلى أنهم في الوقت الحالي لا يمكنهم التأكيد على إتصال مباشر بين العين المزروعة والمخ عبر العصب البصري، ولكنهم إستخدموا خلايا جذعية من النخاع الشوكي لتحفيز التواصل بين العصبين، بأمل أن تحل هذه الخلايا محل الخلايا التالفة وتحمي العصب.
ويعتبر هذا الإنجاز خطوة هائلة نحو مستقبل غير معروف، حيث يقول الجراح إدواردو رودريجيز: “إذا حدث وإستعاد الإبصار بشكل ما، سيكون مذهلا.. لكن الهدف بالنسبة لنا كان إجراء عملية فنية وأن تبقى مقلة العين حية”.
